Liechtenstein Insurance Intermediaries License

Liechtenstein Insurance Intermediaries

As part of insurance intermediary supervision, the Financial Market Authority (FMA) executes the Insurance Distribution Act and the associated Insurance Distribution Ordinance. The FMA's main tasks include issuing and withdrawing licenses for insurance intermediaries, maintaining an insurance intermediary register, ongoing supervision of intermediaries, and safeguarding policyholders' interests.

Intermediaries domiciled in Liechtenstein require an FMA license to engage in insurance distribution. However, intermediaries already supervised in another EEA Contracting Party or Switzerland and active in Liechtenstein under the freedom to provide services or freedom of establishment do not need a separate license.

License applications and accompanying documents must be in German or English. The application is submitted online to the FMA. Legal persons must have their registered office in Liechtenstein, and their head office must be situated there as well.

The FMA confirms the completeness of the application and decides on granting a license within three months of receiving the complete application. All licensed intermediaries are entered in the intermediary register maintained by the FMA.

The fee for the license and entry in the register varies based on the type of intermediary and the number of employees involved in insurance distribution. Additionally, intermediaries pay an annual supervisory tax based on their gross income from the preceding year.
