UK General Insurance License

United Kingdom General Insurers

General insurance in the United Kingdom covers non-life insurance needs, including products like motor, travel, pet, health, and home insurance. In 2013, the UK government introduced substantial reforms to regulate the financial services sector, particularly insurance. This resulted in the establishment of two key regulatory bodies:

The Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA), responsible for ensuring the safety and soundness of insurers and safeguarding policyholders.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which oversees the conduct of firms and ensures the integrity of the UK's financial markets.

Licensing for insurance operations in the UK involves obtaining the relevant Part 4A FSMA permission from the PRA, unless exempt or relying on the EU's passporting regime. Applicants must meet threshold conditions related to authorization, ongoing capitalization, management systems, and the fitness of senior management. The application process entails submitting detailed forms and a business plan, accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of GBP 25,000 (approximately USD 32,360).

Authorized insurers are also required to pay an annual fee to the PRA. Taxation for companies engaged in general insurance business in the UK follows standard corporation tax rules.
